Manchester United recorded a first home win of the Premier League season on Saturday night, taking a hard-won 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made two changes to his previous starting XI replacing injured Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay with Alex Telles and Nemanja Matic, the former making his Old Trafford debut Notably, Paul Pogba was left out of the 18-player squad following an ankle injury sustained with France
Wearing black armbands as a tribute to the late Albert Quixall, United started off brilliantly and Anthony Martial almost scored in the first minute with a header in the air from cross from Juan Mata, but the exceptional opportunity of the opening stages came to the 17th minute
It started with Harry Maguire intercepting a loose ball down the halfway line, leading forward and playing away from Marcus Rashford His cross was reunited with Fernandes and Portuguese teed Martial, whose close range shot was brilliantly saved by former United man Johnstone
Not to be outdone at the other end, United no1 David De Gea showed his quality an instant later with a brilliant fingertip save to push Karlan Grant’s right-footed shot just inches wide from the post
The Baggies had a deep defensive line and that frustrated the Reds, but Fernandes almost inspired an opening in the 33rd minute, with an outstanding pass to the back post that Mata sent back into the six-yard box A deflection on a defender left the ball in the air and Martial was slightly beaten 50/50 by the advancing Johnstone
Maguire was next to come in close with a thunderous volley that smashed the face of West Brom captain Bartley, who collapsed as a result, but he quickly rose to his feet and nearly scored in the 42nd minute with a head that landed on the roof of De Gea’s goal

SECOND HALF – BRUNO PENALTY DRAMA FOR TWO PURPOSES
The start of the second half was unusually delayed by around 30 seconds after referee Coate berated a West Brom coach for leading his players through a warm-up exercise on the field – which, of course, frustratingly, required the recovery of a lot of cones the other side of the field
When the game finally restarted, the official was right on the subject: initially awarding a penalty to the visitors following an apparent foul by Fernandes on Conor Gallagher, before drastically overturning the decision after consulting his VAR instructor. at the edge of the field
But there was still more drama to come: After De Gea made a stunning save with his foot to deny Conor Townsend, United won a penalty at the other end when Mata’s cross slapped Darnell Furlong’s hand Fernandes saw his kick saved by Johnstone, but the former Red had left his line and our Portuguese playmaker managed to find the opposite corner with his recovery
West Brom manager Slaven Bilic made two changes shortly after that concession and one of his substitutes Callum Robinson drew attention when his curling shot bounced off the crossbar Credit must be given to West Brom striker Johnstone, who continued his superb performance with a few brilliant saves to turn off Rashford and then Maguire

A tense final ensued as rain fell at Old Trafford and Solskjaer’s Reds stuck together, thwarting a late West Brom rally and claiming a valuable Premier League victory

United’s attention now turns to the UEFA Champions League and an important Group H game against Istanbul Basaksehir on Tuesday at Old Trafford
