With a new album, a new book, a holiday musical, a growing business empire, and a philanthropic legacy, Dolly Parton isn’t slowing down The iconic star talks to Judy Woodruff about getting feel more creative and productive than ever, and why she would rather ‘wear out’ than ‘rust’ “

Her $ 1 million contribution to coronavirus research at Vanderbilt University helped develop the promising vaccine Moderna She has 44 career best country albums, a record for any artist, and over 100 chart-topping singles in the past 40 years

Now with a new book and a Christmas musical, she told me this week that she is more productive than ever

She’s here, here, here and here Everything is to come Dolly, all part of the Dolly empire

You write songs, you sing, you act, you do philanthropic work, you run your business, you produce musicals

Well I have a lot of passion I have a lot of spiritual energy and a lot of creative energy And that’s a pretty big strength, actually

I have to say I’m a lot busier now than when I started because I was just trying to get things done Now I think energy breeds energy And I love to be creative and do things for other people, and especially working during a time like this, when everyone is a bit cut off from their normal life

This energy has perhaps never been more evident than it is now, with the release of a 19 DVD collection of her music, “A Holly Dolly Christmas”, her first holiday release in 30 years, a next week musical, “Christmas in the Square”, on Netflix, and a book this week, “Songteller: My Life in Lyrics”

Is there more of you who are the singer, plus you who are the writer? Are they equal parts of who you are?

I have to honestly say I think I would take myself more seriously as a songwriter than anything else

There are a lot of writers taller than me, but that’s what I liked the most, because it’s my therapy, it’s my pleasure, it’s my job, it’s is my joy

Dolly Parton grew up the fourth of 12 children in a one-room cabin on the banks of the Little Pigeon River in the small town of Pittman Center in eastern Tennessee

She started singing as a child on local radio and television At age 13, she was recording her first records and appeared at the Grand Ole Opry, where Johnny Cash encouraged her to follow her talent

She lives in Nashville Tennessee has always been her home port and she has kept family and her own life at the heart of her work

There are also threads of me in everything I write, almost like little secrets, little secret pieces of me that even I don’t really realize But I have the gift of rhyme and I like to write songs

She has composed 3,000 amazing songs, including “Coat of Many Colors”, “9 to 5”, “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” “

Dolly became the first country artist to appear in the Top 20 Billboard in seven consecutive decades, starting in the 1960s

Literacy is another passion of Parton Its Imagination Library, now in its 25th year, will donate the 150 millionth book to children around the world next month, all the result, once again, of the Parton’s response to something near him

I am as proud of the Imagination Library as I will ever be, everything I will do for the rest of my life

And I told the story several times, because of my own father, who could neither read nor write, grew up in a big family in the mountains

And so when I saw how emotionally crippled my dad was I wanted to do something to help him He just loved to be a part of it And he was so proud of it And it gave me such pride that I could do this for my daddy

In this song, “When Life Is Good Again”, released in May, Parton spoke about the pandemic and the overwhelming effect it has had across the country

This whole year has taken its toll on everyone This is the craziest year I have ever seen in my life I didn’t want to be paralyzed with fear about it, and that I had the freedom, the ability and the equipment to do something about it So I kept trying to work

In the music video you released back in the spring, you said at the end wear a mask

If wearing a mask prevents some germs from you or someone else, why not? Even though some say it’s crazy, it’s crazy not to

We also know that this year, Dolly Parton, we have seen a yawning political divide in this country

I have seen the great divide this has caused, even within my own family and between my own friends

I don’t know what to think of the way people act these days, how we have to even push our political views to such a point where it only destroys our whole family and our whole lifestyle

So we need to pay a little more attention to being human beings, rather than getting caught up in so many other things

She defines herself as non-partisan, but Parton speaks out on some important causes, like Black Lives Matter

When someone asks you openly, do you think black lives matter, well of course black lives matter We are all children of God We all have a place in this world We all have need to be loved and respected

She told me about her own approach to overcoming obstacles by making music and directing her guess, including Dollywood Theme Park

I can speak for women and for myself And I had it easier than most, because I just had – I was confident in myself, and too stupid to know or to thinking about it another way I had a talent that I thought I could do – make us all a bunch of money And that’s what – I was going to business meetings with men

Of course I’ve been hit all my life, and especially in those early days But I knew how to handle it on my own I never sold myself, I never did anything that could take away who I ‘was as a human being

I don’t care if you are, as I say, black or white or whatever I don’t care if you are gay or lesbian or transgender Everyone should have an equal chance

You’ve said it many times – you’ve said you don’t want to look old anyway, which of course you don’t

There are good benefits of getting older, which is that you can look back on your life and see what you’ve accomplished and see what you can do to help other people on their journey. I’m doing right now

I want to live young I want to think young I want to look young I always want to be important I want to be useful And, as I have often said, I would much rather wear out than rust

For a member of this rarefied animator group who has received Grammy, Tony, Emmy, and Academy Award nominations, and has saved plans for the future, rust seems highly unlikely
