Nuno Espirito Santo says the current fixture list is a ‘big deal’ – but continues to argue that the potential introduction of five substitutes is not the way to solve the problem

Wolves boss has barely started preparing his squad for Monday’s Premier League clash with Southampton after his players’ respective returns from international duty and associated coronavirus protocols

But despite the endless schedule wreaking havoc, and this week’s announcement that the EFL will increase the quota of substitutes, Nuno refuses to budge in his belief that the elite should not follow suit.

Nuno Espirito Santo has beaten the Premier League’s toughest fixture list but plans to bypass it

Wolves boss (right) says hike to five substitutions is not the way to go

He said: ‘It’s always an awkward moment when you come back after the break, and it tells us there’s a big problem with scheduling meetings – all of these things are being discussed and can be improved

‘The schedule is tough for everyone We always work the details in our minds knowing that every aspect is important – it’s about trying to make your time with players as useful as possible

‘It’s clear that the fixture list and the schedule are our biggest concerns – it’s not about the substitutes, it’s about the schedule, and that’s the problem solved

‘I don’t see a direct situation with substitutes When a player has problems, the best way is not to play him, and that way you can protect him.So he has to be with rotation, not substitution’

Defender Conor Coady saw his uninterrupted streak of 121 consecutive league games come to an end after being forced to leave the England squad and isolate himself
